Dynasty Warriors 9 on PS4 – A Risky Evolution of a Classic Series
Dynasty Warriors 9 tried to shake things up in a big way. Known for its fast-paced hack-and-slash action and massive battles, the series took a surprising turn with this PS4 entry by going open-world. But did it work? Well, kind of—but not without some serious growing pains.
A Vast Open World… But Not Much In It
One of the biggest changes in Dynasty Warriors 9 is its shift to an open-world format. On paper, the idea sounds great—explore ancient China, take on side missions, hunt animals, and climb mountains between battles. In reality, though, the world feels empty. There’s a lot of ground to cover, but not a lot to actually do in between missions. Fast travel becomes a must, and even then, it often feels like the world is just too spread out for its own good.
Same Old Action – But That’s Not a Bad Thing
When it comes to combat, Dynasty Warriors 9 stays true to its roots. You’ll still be mowing down hundreds of enemies with over-the-top combos and flashy special moves. The new “flow attack” system adds some variety, letting you chain together light and heavy attacks depending on your enemy’s state. It’s still satisfying, even if it doesn’t reinvent the wheel.
Technical Issues on PS4
On the PS4, Dynasty Warriors 9 struggles to keep up. Frame rate drops, pop-in textures, and clunky animations can take you out of the experience. The game tries to do a lot, but it often feels like the hardware is just barely keeping up. If you’re playing on a base PS4, expect some performance hiccups.
Final Thoughts
Dynasty Warriors 9 is ambitious, but not always successful. The move to open-world was bold, but maybe too much too soon. Still, if you’re a longtime fan of the franchise and just want more large-scale battles and familiar faces, there’s still fun to be had—just know what you’re getting into.
